From mine to market: how a gemstone becomes jewellery

Tiffany Wijepala

Christina Jewellers grew out of Wijaya Gems, a family gem business with 45 years of experience from mine to market. Wijaya Gems handles extraction, processing and sales of gems, supplying local and international markets. Christina Jewellers began in 2003 to carry that work into finished jewellery.

  1. Mining. Gem gravels are mined and washed to recover rough stones.
  2. Sorting. Rough stones are sorted by colour, size and quality.
  3. Cutting. A cutter shapes and polishes each stone to bring out its colour and brilliance.
  4. Designing. The cut stone is matched to a design. For custom pieces we prepare a 3D design for you to approve.
  5. Making. The piece is made in the metal you choose: yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum.
